Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos Takes General Assembly to Alimosho, Strengthens Drive for Unity and Grassroots Inclusion

LAGOS – In a move aimed at deepening grassroots participation and strengthening unity among Ndigbo in Lagos State, the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos State has concluded arrangements for its second General Assembly under the administration of Chief Leonard Okafor (Oba Ojoto).

Scheduled to hold on Saturday at Abesan Stadium, off Gate Bus Stop along Ayobo/Ipaja Road, Mosan-Okunola, Alimosho Local Government Area, the assembly is expected to attract a large gathering of traditional rulers, community leaders, professionals, business executives, women groups, youth organisations and other stakeholders from across the state.

The choice for Alimosho as the host location for the underscores the current administration’s determination to make the activities of Ohanaeze more accessible to members living in different parts of Lagos. Also, as one of the most strategic locations within the state, the venue is expected to accommodate the organisation’s expanding membership.

According to an official invitation jointly signed by the President, Chief Leo Okafor, and the State Secretary, Comrade Mike Orji, all Ndigbo residents in Lagos State have been invited to participate in the meeting. The notice further describes the gathering as a very important meeting where discussions relating to unity, peace, welfare, development, and the collective interests of the Igbo community will take place.

Just a few months after the inauguration of the current executive, the General Assembly represents another milestone in the administration’s efforts to strengthen institutional structures and encourage wider participation in the affairs of the organisation.

Important activities lined up for the event include; the opening prayer, the traditional breaking of kola nut, adoption of the minutes of the previous General Assembly, the President’s address, deliberations on peace and unity, presentation of the financial report, Any Other Business (AOB), closing prayer and refreshments.

Right after he was elected as the President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos State, Chief Leonard Okafor has pursued reforms aimed at repositioning Ohanaeze Ndigbo as a more responsive, transparent and inclusive socio-cultural organisation. His administration has placed considerable emphasis on accountability, youth empowerment, grassroots mobilisation and effective communication with members.

Many stakeholders believe these initiatives have restored confidence in the organisation while creating stronger bonds among various Igbo communities spread across Lagos State.

Equally noteworthy is the administration’s commitment to constructive engagement with government institutions, traditional authorities and other ethnic organisations. This collaborative approach has continued to promote peaceful coexistence while advancing the legitimate interests of Ndigbo in Lagos.

Consistent advocacy for unity has remained one of Chief Okafor’s defining leadership principles. Through several public engagements, he has encouraged Ndigbo to close ranks, speak with one voice and build enduring partnerships with other ethnic nationalities in pursuit of mutual development and social harmony.

Another innovation introduced by the current leadership is the rotation of General Assembly venues across different parts of Lagos State. Members have welcomed the initiative, noting that it has made meetings more accessible and encouraged broader participation by people who previously found attendance difficult because of distance.

Expected to generate considerable interest during the assembly is the presentation of the organisation’s financial report, which will provide members with a comprehensive account of income and expenditure in keeping with the administration’s commitment to transparency and prudent management of resources.

As anticipation continues to build, many members are optimistic that the General Assembly will consolidate the gains recorded so far, strengthen the bonds of unity among Ndigbo in Lagos and produce far-reaching resolutions that will further advance the organisation’s vision of inclusive leadership and purposeful service.
