Bickerings in Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo, Lagos State Chapter, took a fresh turn on Tuesday as the organisation’s Secretary, Comrade Mike Orji, issued a strong rejoinder rejecting recent claims that the office of the President of the association had become vacant.

In a statement titled “The Time for Hypocrisy and Deception Is Over,” Orji faulted a recent press statement credited to Mr. Robert Obasi, who identified himself as Secretary General and called for what he described as “organized integrity” within the organisation.

According to Orji, the remarks attributed to Obasi were inconsistent with his past actions and did not reflect the realities surrounding the leadership of the Lagos chapter. He alleged that individuals behind the latest declaration were attempting to create confusion within the organisation by challenging a leadership that emerged through what he described as a duly conducted electoral process.

The statement further maintained that the office of the President of Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo, Lagos State, is not vacant, insisting that High Chief Leonard Okafor remains the constitutionally elected President of the chapter.

Orji argued that any attempt to declare the office vacant through a media statement lacks constitutional backing and does not reflect the wishes of members of the organisation. He also alleged that the ongoing disagreement stemmed from the refusal of some former officials to accept the outcome of the election and complete the transition process following the expiration of their tenure.

The Secretary further claimed that external interests were being introduced into the affairs of the Lagos chapter, contrary to the principles of autonomy and internal democratic governance. He maintained that the organisation should be guided by its constitution, bye-laws, and the collective will of its members rather than outside influence.

Addressing calls for transparency, accountability and integrity, Orji contended that those principles must begin with respect for the constitution, adherence to established procedures, and acceptance of the outcome of what he described as a free, fair and credible election.

He also dismissed allegations questioning the legitimacy of the current leadership, reiterating that the administration of High Chief Leonard Okafor remains valid and enjoys the mandate of members.

Reaffirming the position of his group, Orji stated that Ohanaeze Ndi-Igbo, Lagos State, belongs to all its members and should not be subjected to actions capable of creating division or undermining its constitutional structures.

He urged members to remain united, respect the organisation’s constitution and bye-laws, and continue to support the existing leadership while lawful mechanisms are used to resolve any internal disagreements.
